Publishing a book is a little like falling in love. It’s so amazing that once you’ve done it, you want all your friends to experience it too. Yesterday, my friend and Indie Jane co-owner Jessica Melendez (AKA Jessica Grey) published her YA fantasy novel, Awake, and I am almost as excited as she is.

I got my first taste of Awake last spring when Jessica sent me the first seven chapters, with the standard author disclaimer that it was a very, very rough draft. I read those chapters in one sitting. I literally could not put it down.

Last night, I read the final, published draft of Awake, and just like last spring, I read from start to finish with almost no breaks. In Awake, Jessica pulls together some of the familiar elements of Sleeping Beauty, but she twists them into something altogether unique. What would happen if instead of just waking up the princess, the prince fell asleep in her place when he kissed her? And what would happen if magic and fairytales weren’t make believe, but were actually threatening modern-day Los Angeles?

Awake is the first novel Jessica Grey’s Fairytale Trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the first draft of book 2. Soon, I hope?

There is a full review on my blog, but if you don’t want to follow the link, I can guarantee this is one book you will not regret reading. The humor and wit you’re familiar with from Jessica’s posts here at Indie Jane are both evident in her book. The characters are delightful, and the romance sparkles.

Awake is currently available from Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon.

I’ve been quite interested in the idea of the fairytale re-crafted. One of my current WIP has elements of Snow White (a magic mirror) mixed with Aladdin (genie in a lamp). It’s so fun to see where you can take things.
